Charles Bates lived in Akaroa, Canterbury, New Zealand.

Charles was born in Ireland.[1] He was the son of Joseph Bates, school master, and lived at Munterneese, Inver, County Donegal, as of 1845.

On 1 May 1845 at Inver Church of Ireland, Donegal, he(22) married Margaret Miller(22) of Drumaneary, daughter of John Miller, farmer. Witnessed by Charles Bates and James Walsh. [2]

As of 1860, Charles lived in the 19th Ward of Philadelphia City, Pennsylvania, USA. With him were wife Margaret(32, Ireland) and 6 children all born in Philadelphia: Matilda(15), Joseph(11), Mary(8), Charles(6), Margaret(5) and George(2). [1]

Charles arrived at Lyttelton, New Zealand on 24 Mar 1864 aboard the Indian Empire. Traveling with him were wife Margaret, and children Isabella(16), Samuel J(14), Mary M(11), Charles W(9), Margaret(7), George D.(4) and Eliza A.(infant) [3]

He was a dairy farmer at French Farm.[4] [5]

In 1890 he sold the farm at French Farm. [6]

Research Notes

The obituary of son George D. Bates confirms that he was born in Pennsylvania, which confirms that this 1860 census record goes with the 1864 passenger log.

However it is yet to be explained the nationality of "Lancashire" on the passenger log. They may have returned from Pennsylvania to the UK and then emigrated to New Zealand.

The 1850 census gives his birth as England, whereas 1860 gives it as Ireland.

I couldn't find a record of him after the 1890 French Farm sale. Other ancestry sites give an 1898 death at Stratford; which is where his eldest daughter lived there. NZ BDM Death 1898/6602 does have the correct age (76). There is a NZSG certificate for that name and date with associated placename Cardiff.
