Mary was the child of Joseph Bates and Eliza Armstrong. [1]
Not the same as her niece Mary Martha (Bates) Wright (1851-1886) for whom several records exist to indicate different parents. See notes of Charles Armstrong Bates (abt.1822-abt.1898) for discussion.

Things got confusing without having photographic evidence, due to the fact that he had 2 wives. However, the dates are wrong somewhere. If she was 36 in 1886, that means she was born in 1850 - 5 years after her dad Joseph's death in 1845 (which I know for a fact as I have seen that gravestone). It is possible her mum Eliza could have shacked up with someone else, but for discretions-sake I have given her a birth year of 1845. She also may have lied (as is a woman's prerogative) about her age... So it seems she died in child-birth, did the child survive? Kathryn :)
In fact there is a death certificate for the daughter of Joseph Bates, dated 16 Jan 1867 at Munterneese, Co. Donegal, Ireland. (The same place that Joseph Bates died). See Ancestry Profile.
There is some pretty compelling evidence for Mrs. William Wright being the daughter of Charles Armstrong Bates (and therefore the niece of Bates-5857) . I have updated their profiles with link to primary sources. What do you reckon?
