Biography

THE KANGAROO ISLAND ACCIDENT. Kingscote, October 7. All hope has been abandoned in the case of Mr. R. Bates, mail contractor, and Misses Elsie and Millie Bates, whose sailing boat was found at the bottom of the American River in an upright position with all the sails set. It appears that Mr. Bates had delivered the mails on Sunday to the Muston and American River post-offices, and was seen by Mr. Jones returning home. He had on board his two cousins, Misses Elsie and Millie Bates, daughters of Mr. E. S. Bates, of Hog Bay. When Mr. Jones saw them they were just off his house, and he exchanged greetings with them. It was blowing a stiff gale at the time. On Monday his children reported that a boat with a mast was close by wrecked. The police of Hog Bay were informed, and soon they were searching for the missing people. The terrible tide, however, made the work extremely difficult. The police and harbormaster from here were on Wednesday searching for the bodies, using drags, but the tide was very strong. Five other boats are constantly searching. Mr. Bates was the son of Mr. Harry Bates, and was a clever seaman, but the line on the mainsheet was found to be made fast when the capsized boat was examined. Great sympathy is felt here for Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Bates and the other members of the family. No one saw the accident, and it is only surmised that owing to the heavy gale blowing a large sea struck the boat, which is only 14 ft., and capsized her, thus drowning the three occupants. [1]
