Biography

I took over management of this profile on Nov. 11, 2023 because I am related to his daughter Arlina Bates through the Armstrong family. The profile appeared to have information from 3 different families compiled into one family history based upon three women named Elizabeth Bates with different birth dates and birth locations. I have put those discrepancies in the Notes below with more details in the profile for Elizabeth Bates.

About 1780, John Bates was born in the United States (Unknown source).

Sometime before 1816, John married Elizabeth White (unknown source). She was born about 1779 in the United States (1851 Census).

Arlina “Orcanby” Bates was born and later died in 1844. She was the wife of Richard Armstrong. In 1848, Richard purchased some of John’s land (below). No source has been found for "Orcanby" which may have been a nickname.

On June 6, 1826, Caroline Kathleen Bates was born in Ontario (findagrave).

On February 16, 1847, an affidavit recorded that John Bates occupied the West 1/2 of Lot 23, 1st Concession, Albion, with 18-20 acres under cultivation with a house and a barn. (Archives of Ontario, RG40-296). This was probably to certify that John had completed the duties on the land and was entitled to claim title to the land. See the image attached to this profile.

On March 31, 1848, John Bates became the “assignee” to that lot. See the image attached to this profile.

On May 15, 1848, John Bates was granted title to 100 acres on the west half of Lot 23, Con. 1, Albion Township, Peel County, Ontario. On October 20, 1848, John sold the southwest 50 acres to Alexander McKee for 50 pounds. On the same day he sold the northwest 50 acres to Richard Armstrong. On May 2, 1849, Richard sold his land to John Cannington for 100 pounds. [1]

Between 1848 and 1851, John died in Albion Twp., Peel County, Ontario. There were no Bates grave markers found in the township on findagrave.com but a grave marker may not have survived.

The 1851/1852 Albion Township Census recorded Elizabeth Bates, age 72 (born about 1779), a widow born in the US, in the household of George Raimsbottom. George was recorded with the surname Raymer, Raimer, and Ramer on other documents.

This was the last record of Elizabeth Bates (born about 1779) found.

Notes

Two marriages between John Bates and Elizabeth White were found. One was in the 1840s in Ontario, which was too late to have been the correct marriage. The other was in England but other records did not have the family living there. The Canterbury Marriage Register recorded that on November 18, 1804, John BATES married Elizabeth WHITE in Alkham, St. Anthony the Martyr, Kent, England. The groom's parish was Dover Castle and Elizabeth’s was St. Anthony's Parish. Witnesses to the marriage were Jeremiah Beal and Gregory Cutting (unknown source).

The following census record does not appear to be the same Elizabeth Bates because the place of birth and age do not match those in the 1851 Census. Caroline Raymes was living in the area in 1881. No other records were found for this Elizabeth and Oliver Bates. The 1861 Reach Township recorded Elizabeth Bates, age 69 (born about 1792), a widow born in England, Church of England, with Oliver Bates, 20 (born about 1841), a labourer born in Ontario, in the household of Peter Williams, 42, a farmer, and his family.

Elizabeth and Oliver were more likely connected to Noah Bates of Reach Township. BATES families living in Reach Township in 1861 included: (1) BATES Noah, 41, farmer, and his family Mary, Esra, Ira, Joel, Charles and Frank, (2) BATES George, 49, shoemaker, and his family Frances, William, Mary Jane, Frances, and George.

The 1871 Ontario County Atlas recorded a Noah Bates but no Raymes, Raimes, or Rames surnames.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
