Biography

Dorothy was born in 1903. She was the daughter of David Bates and Mary Neil. She passed away in 1983.

Aunty Dorothy was always the eccentric maiden aunt who we were always a bit scared of. Every birthday we would each receive a card with a $5 note, and a soft-old-lady-skin kiss (the Aunty Dorothy kiss) on the cheek. We (well I) were totally unaware what a canny old thing she was, investing her money in shares, art and property. She was very much into the arts in NZ, and bought many notable NZ artists work, namely Petrus Van der Velden and more contemporary works by Don Peebles. Her sister Davina was a trained opera singer and singing teacher.

She attended Rangi Ruru school and there is still a prize awarded in her name, the Dorothy Bates Trophy.
