Occupation is given as Hay Binder Cause of Death: Fracture of his skull due to falling from a hayloft There appears to have been an inquest involving the Coroner for the Duchy of Lancaster in the County of Middlesex.

A local newspaper reported on the inquest: "“On Tuesday last an inquest was held at the Two Brewers, Tanners End, on the body of Benjamin BATES, a hay binder, 51 years of age , whose death, took place on the previous Friday. It appeared from the evidence of a son of the deceased, about 12 years of age (Samuel Bates), that on Thursday last his father was at work at Mr. Thompson’s farm, Clay Hill, Tottenham, and was taking down the top scaffolding of the hayrick, when one of the boards slipped and fell, his father falling with it from a height of about 10 feet...............deceased was quite sober, having been a teetotaller (sic) for some years ................. believed that he sustained a fracture of the skull and this was the cause of death. The Jury returued (sic) of accidental death."
