Gregory Bateson was a British anthropologist, social scientist, and cyberneticist. He and his colleagues Donald Jackson, Jay Haley, and John H. Weakland developed the double-bind theory.[1]
He was born on 9 May 1904 in Grantchester, Cambridgeshire, England.[2] He was the son of geneticist William Bateson and Caroline Beatrice Durham .[3] He was named after Gregor Mendel .[4]
He married American anthropologist Margaret Mead
in 1936. They had a daughter, Mary Catherine. They separated in 1947 and divorced in 1950.[5]
He married Elizabeth Sumner in 1951. They had a son, John Sumner, and twins who died shortly after birth. They divorced in 1957.[6]
He married Lois Camack in 1961. They had a daughter, Nora.[7]
He served in the Office of Strategic Services during World War II.[8]
He became a United States citizen in 1956.[9]
He was a member of the Lindisfarne Association.[10]
Gregory died in San Francisco, California on 4 July 1980.[11]
