Biography

It would appear that Arthur William was the final child of his Fathers first wife, Mary Jane. She died in the same Qtr of 1889 (maybe during childbirth).

In the 1891 Census he is living with the Family at: 7 Ward Street, Kirkham, Lancashire. Aged 1.

In the 1901 Census he is living with the family at: 3 White Ash, Birtle-cum-bamford, Heywood, Lancashire. His given age is 11.

In the 1911 Census he is living with the family at: 4 Pleasant Street, Heywood, Lancashire. His given age is 21 and he is single. His occupation is listed as "Wharehouseman - Cotton towel weaving".

In 1919 he Marries Mary Elizabeth Betts at the Providence Baptist Chapel, Tong, Bacup, Lancashire. At the time of the marriage both Arthur and Mary are living at 31 Burnley Road, Bacup. His occupation is shown as "Machine Cotton Twister", his father Hugh Walter is listed as "Deceased" and his occupation as "Coachman (domestic)". This is very odd as his father lived until 1941, what had happened between them to cause such a rift.

In the 1921 Census Arthur and Mary along with new Daughter Edna are still living at 31 Burnley Road Bacup. His occupation is shown as "Cotton Machine Twister" and he is employed by W.R. Lee Ltd Towel Manufacturer in Hooley Bridge Mill, Heywood. His age is given as 32 years and 2 months and place of birth as Kirkham, Lancashire. Living with them are the Hargreaves family (Brother and Sister-in-law).

The 1939 Register shows him and the family living at: 11 Mine Street, Heywood, Lancashire. His occupation is listed as "Machine Twister (Cotton)".
