Biography

Grace was baptised on 24 February 1775 the daughter of Henry Batten and Mary, in St Nicholas and St Faith Church, Saltash, Cornwall, England [1]

Grace married twice

  1. First marriage - Richard Roberts of Landulph by licence on 30 April 1800 in the parish of St Stephens by Saltash, Cornwall, England.[2][3] Richard died three years later and was buried on 24 September 1803 in his home parish of Landulph in Cornwall.[4]
  2. Second marriage - John Greenwood of Liskeard by licence on 4 November 1804, Landulph, Cornwall, England.[5]

She passed away at age 65 while residing in Treludick on 5 June 1841.[6] [7] [8]

Grace was buried on 10 June in Ss Petrock & Keri Churchyard, Egloskerry, Cornwall, England.[9][10] Graces's headstone reads

Sacred to the Memory of Grace / the wife of John G. Bone of this Parish / Who departed this life on the / 5th of June 1841 / aged 65 years / Our kindness to our suffering friends / Would keep them still below / But he, who loves them better, sends / And at his call they go / Our days on the earth are as a shadow and there is now abiding--1 Chron . XXIX:15

Research Notes

Name of Father - Grace's father is confirmed when Grace and her husband have their children baptised in Landulph, Cornwall between 1807 and 1810, she is recorded not only as being John Greenwood Bone's wife but also as the daughter of Henry Batten of St Stephens [Cornwall]. See the profiles of John Bone (bef. 1807), Richard Bone (bef. 1809) and Grace Bone (bef. 1810) for more detail.

Grace was identified in her Father's, Henry Batten, Will which he wrote on 19 February 1800 as Grace Batten.[11]

Grace was identified in her mother’s, Mary Batten Will which she wrote on 29 January 1822 as Grace Bone.[12]

1841 Census the 1841 census was taken on the 6 June 1841, although Grace died on the 5 June she is not recorded, and her husband has no wife present in his entry in the Census which suggests she had either died or was missed as she was sick at the time.

Burial - The only burial listed in the parish registers that seems to correspond to this time period refers to a Sarah rather than a Grace Bone, this could be a mix up of names? "Sarah was living in Treludick, Egloskerry when she died in 1841 which is where her husband was living when the 1841 census was taken, It is likely that Grace was living with her husband at the time of her death.[13]

Children from first marriage - no children have been identified from Grace's first marriage.
