Jefferson Davis Baughman was born at his parents home in Douglas, Jackson Parish, Louisiana, Confederate States of America, on 29 August 1861. He was the son of a "Wagon-maker:" Michael Baughman, and his wife, Emeline (Chapman) Baughman, both natives of Fairfield County, South Carolina. They had married in South Carolina in 1852 and then moved to Louisiana around 1855. The family had been recorded on the June 1860 US Census living in Jackson Parish, Louisiana: [1] Jeff Davis was their 4th child (of 12 total) and first-born son, with 3 younger brothers.
In the late 1880s, Jefferson Davis Baughman married Miss Nancy Jane (aka "Naomi") Fenton, born 18 December 1869 in Louisiana (died: 1950 in Union Parish, Louisiana). Her father, George Fenton (1827-1891), was an immigrant from Scotland and a Blacksmith. Her mother Elizabeth Ellen McGough 1835–1890, had been born in Alabama. They had married on 29 May 1855 in Union Parish, Louisiana, USA. Nancy Jane "Nannie" was the 4th of their 5 children; all of whom were born in Louisiana. [2]

On the 1 June 1900 US Census, J. D. Baughman was enumerated as 38 years old, white, married to Nannie Baughman, age 30. They were living with their 4 daughters: ages 10 to 4 years old, his younger brother: Oscar Baughman, age 26; and a nephew: George Kill, 28 years old, all on J.D.'s ranch (which he owned) in E.D. 115, Ward 1, Precinct 1 Farmerville town, Union, Louisiana, United States. The Census said that J. D. Baughman was a "Stockman" (owned a beef cattle herd) and that his nephew, who was not yet married, worked for him as a "Stockman". His brother Oscar was a "[River] Steamboat Master". The older girls were "At school". The Census further recorded that J.D. and Nannie Baughman had been married for 11 years [ca. 1889] and that Nannie had had 5 children but only 4 of them were still living in June 1900. [4]
Jefferson Davis Baughman passed away at his home in Farmerville, Union Parish, Louisiana, USA, on 19 November 1919. He was 58 years, 2 months & 20 days old. [5] He was buried at the Baughman Cemetery, Farmerville, Union Parish, Louisiana, USA. [6]
Nancy Jane (Fenton) Baughman survived her husband's passing. She did not remarry and continued to live in their stately home in Farmerville, Union Parish, Louisiana. One of their daughters, Faye Baughman, b: 1895, never married and lived with her mother in the family's 1902 mansion until her own passing in 1979. Her mother, "Nannie" Baughman, died after an illness at Monroe, Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, on 15 October 1950. She was 80 years old. She was buried next to her late husband at the Baughman Cemetery, Farmerville, Union Parish, Louisiana, USA. After daughter Faye's death their stately home was sold and is now a Bed & Breakfast Inn.
