John Baxter was born in 1849 in Tullalook, Moira County Down. Northern Ireland. No record has been found of John's birth in Ireland. He was thought to have followed Ann Eliza to Glasgow after the death of his mother Mary. As he signed his marriage certificate with an X he was most likely uneducated.[1] His occupation is listed in 1873 as a Carter ( horse and cart). John's address in Glasgow was 11 Oakbank St and Anne's was 15 Oakbank St.
John and Anne emigrated to New Zealand onboard the Cartsburn, a vessel of 1251 tons Capt Young, sailed from Greenock dock Glasgow Scotland on April 9, 1874 with 316 immigrants and passengers. They crossed the equator on May 16 and arrived Port Chalmers Otago NZ on July 11. [2]
During the voyage there were nine births including Mary Jane Cartsburn Baxter and four deaths, all of children under two years.
Mary Jane was born while the ship was becalmed in the Indian ocean. John and Anne were to have another 10 children born in New Zealand.
John's occupation in Riverton NZ is listed as Plate layer ( railway surfaceman). They lived on the corner section at 7 Thames St Riverton. The house no longer exists.
John is buried in 48 Anglican Section Row F of Riverton Cemetery[3]
John's will (1932) names children: William, David, Thomas, Albert, Christina, Esther and Madeline [1]
