Note N11
The Evening Leader
Corning, NY
Monday, July 26, 1926
Addison, July 26-Five people had a miraculous escape from death about 10:45 Saturday night whenthe car in which they were riding turned completely over on the Reuben Creek bridge.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Baxter, accompanied by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Baxter and Frank A. Smith, all residing on Orr Hill, were returning home from Addison after spending the evening in town. As the car rounded the curve the light from the headlights fell on the railing and Mr. Baxter being unfamiliar with the road thought this was the railing of the bridge and drove on, not knowing his mistake until the creek came. The car went up on the railing of the bridge, and then turned completely over, landing on the floor of the bridge and pinning all the occupants under the car. Mr. Baxter stated that the car was going about 15 or 20 miles an hour when the accident occurred.
Herbert Baxter was the first to get out from under the car and did so before help came. All of the people who lived nearby rushed to the scene as soon as they heard the crash. Doctors Davis and Crane were called.
Herbert Baxter has a badly sprained and bruised shoulder, but no cuts or bruises. Mrs. Herbert Baxter is thought to be internally injured besides having her face badly cut and bruised. Mr. Smith was more seriously hurt than any of the others, having one broken rib, a badly bruised and possibly cracked hip and internal injuries.
Mrs. Harry Baxter received a severe cut on the head in which seven stitches were taken and received other cuts and bruises. Harry Baxter, driver of the car, received no injuries but was merely shaken up.

Addison, Sept 17-The funeral of Harry Baxter, highly respected resident of Tuscarora, who dropped dead yesterday morning at 6:15 o’clock, one hour after he had arisen, and was preparing to perform his usual duties for the day at his farm, will be held from the First Presbyterian Church in Addison Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock, the Rev. John V. Axtell officiating. Interment will be made in Addison Rural Cemetery.
Mr. Baxter was born 34 years ago on the same farm where he died. He was married 10 years ago last August to Miss Christina Eaton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Eaton of Tuscarora. An ambitious and industrious young man, he followed farming his entire life. His sudden death comes as a sad blow to his immediate family, as well as to the entire community, where he has gained many friends during his life time.
He was a member of the Addison Odd Fellows’ Lodge, and formerly belonged to the branch of the Corning Moose and also Freeman Grange. Although Mr. Baxter had not been feeling in the best of health for a few months past, his condition was not alarming, and was apparently in good health the day prior to his death, when he was in Addison on business. Besides his widow, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Baxter of Orr Hill and an infant daughter, Alice Rose, 11 months of age.
