Research Notes

  1. ) 2023-07-28: The initial GED import of this profile asserts her maiden surname to have been Bayette, however there was not then, nor is there presently any source evidence available to support this assertion. Research on the Ancestry.com site reveals that the most probable origin of this highly improbable maiden surname assertion comes from the following document:
    1. ) The following letter from the Pension file of one Zebulton Cables has been frequently cited in Ancestry.com profiles as evidence to assert that Margaret Beebe, wife of Nathan Beebe, was the daughter of Zebulon and Catherine Cables. These citations then also assert that this Margaret Cables was also known as Rhoda Marguaette Bayette, and was the wife of of the associated Nathan Beebe. This assertion is exceedingly doubtful as the letter was deposed in a Medina County, Ohio court on 18 Sept 1838, by Margaret Beebe (i.e. then married and living Medina Ohio in 1838. ) There is presently no evidence that the Nathan Beebe married to this Margaret ever lived in Ohio: Deposition for Pension application for Zebulon Cables. Testimony of daughter Margaret (Cables) Beebe. She may have been the wife of Nathaniel Abram Beebe (1810-1882) who did live in Medina, Ohio.
    2. ) Based on the work of Dr. Alan Henry, the maiden surname for the wife of Nathan Beebe was changed to Van Cise.

  • Find A Grave: Memorial #8513202; The Margaret Van Cise cited in this Find A Grave biography and buried in the referenced cemetery, has been asserted by FAG to be the daughter or John Cornelius Van Sice, however this assertion is almost certainly incorrect. The following facts strongly suggest FAG conflated the identity of the deceased:
    • The name etched on her tombstone is Margaret Van Cise, this of course suggests that her surname at the time of her death was Van Cise, viz remarried after her prior husband Abraham Lake died. That is to say it is more probable that Van Cise was her married name, not her maiden name as asserted in the FAG profile.
    • The FAG profile asserts her place of birth and death to have been New Jersey. However, Margaret Van Cise, daughter of John Cornelius Van Cise was born at Schnectady, New York and this is confirmed by Dutch Reformed Church Records.
    • FAG asserts her date of birth to have been 19 Jun 1799, whereas the Dutch Reformed Church record documents her date of birth to have been 25 Dec 1793. This date of birth mismatch strongly suggests the Margaret Van Cise buried in the Wyckoff Reformed Church Cemetery at Wyckoff, NJ was an entirely different person and NOT the daughter of John Cornelius Van Cise of Schenectady, NY.
