Service
Helen joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment of the Australian Army Medical Women's Service of the Australian Imperial Force 22 Mar 1943; service number VX64791, citing as her next of kin her uncle Loftus Moran and Mrs F Hughes, her father having died.[6][7][8] The VAD was a voluntary group of women who carried out some of the maintenance work in hospitals to take some of the pressures from nurses and doctors.[9] She was discharged 9 Aug 1944 and was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence MedalWar Medal and Australian Service Medal.[6]
Marriage
Helen became engaged to William James O'Neill 17 Dec 1943 in New Guinea in 1945[7][10] and the couple married in 1944 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.[11][12][13]
