Biographical Information

John W Beaman indicated on census records that he was born in North Carolina. A photograph of his cemetery marker indicates that he was born on 20 August 1823 and that he died on 03 January 1882 which agrees with the online cemetery records database.[1] He married Mary Polly Lucas on 05 Jul 1840 in Owen County, Indiana and they settled in the same neighborhood as her father, Marady Lucas.[2][3] While living in Indiana he was a farmer and by 1860 had acquired a farm worth $3000 and personal property worth $500.[4] During the Civil War he served as a private in Company B of the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery Regiment.[5]

1850 Census: By 1850, John was married and had 3 children who were living in Morgan Township, Owen County, Indiana.[3]

1860 Census: In 1860, John and Polly still lived in Owen County, Indiana. They had 6 children by this time.[4]

1870 Census: In 1870, John, Polly and several of their grown children were living in Greene County, Indiana.[6]

1880 Census: By 1880, John, Polly, several of their grown children and his brother, Bryant and family, had moved west to Harrison County, Iowa where they were farming.[7]

26 December 1882: Died in Harrison County, Iowa.[5]
