Biography

Briant Beaman was one of the early settlers in Owen County, Indiana.[1]

Biographical Information

Briant Beaman was one of the early settlers in Owen County, Indiana.[1]Briant Beaman did not receive any land patents issued by the Federal Government.[2] In 1830, 9 children (6 boys adn 3 girls) all under the age of 20 were listed in his household.[3]

Timeline with Research Notes

The first time there is a Briant / Bryant Beaman listed in any of the U.S. Federal census records is in 1830 in Owen County, Indiana.

Between 1780 and 1790: Birth of Briant Beaman in North Carolinia, probably Duplin County.[3]Some researchers indicate that he was born in 1788; however, no documentation has been found to date to document the exact year of his birth.

Circa 1823-1825: Briant Beaman probably accompanied his brother, Samuel Beaman and father, Francis Beaman, Jr. migrated from North Carolina to Owen County, Indiana; settling first in Morgan Township.[4] The author of the county history, Charles Blanchard, indicates that Samuel Beaman came to Owen County, Indiana in 1824 with his sons, James, Samuel and Alvin, He does not mention Briant Beaman, but he is living in Owen County by 1830.[3] Other supporting information indicating the approximate time that Briant moved his family to Indiana is the birthplaces of his children indicated in the 1850 census records. Son, John W Beaman (born circa 1823) indicated that he was born in North Carolina[5] and the next child was Bryant B Beaman (born about 1826) in Indiana.[6]

1830 Census: In 1830 Briant Beaman is enumerated in Owen County, Indiana.[3] Note: This is the only census record that lists Briant Beaman by name and as the head of a household.

In 1830 his household had the following individuals:

  • 1 male 40-50 years of age - probably Briant
  • 1 male 15 to 20 years of age - probably son, Eli Beaman
  • 1 male 10 to 15 years of age - probably son, Jacob Beaman
  • 2 males 5 to 10 years of age - probably sons, Elijah and John Beaman
  • 2 males <5 years of age - probably sons, Bryant and Samuel Beaman Note: Ezekiel was probably born the same year, 1830.
  • 1 female 30-40 years of age - probably, Mary Langdon Beaman, his wife
  • 2 females 10 to 15 years of age - probably, daughters, Elizabeth and Edith
  • 1 female < 10 years of age - this child is not identified at this time.

03 January 1836: Briant Beaman died. No reference other than there is no Briant, Bryant or B Beaman or any other spelling in any of the 1840 census indexes for a man between the ages of 50 and 60. There is a Bryan Beaman who is 40 to 50 in Montgomery County, North Carolina. He is most likely the son of Abraham Jr and Rhoda (Godwin) Beaman and grandson of Abraham Sr and Elizabeth (D'Auge) Beaman.

1840 Census: - No Briant Beaman, but there is a Mary Beaman, aged 40-50, who is most likely the widow of Briant Beaman.[7] Others living in her household include: --2 males 10 to 15 years of age - probably Bryant and Samuel --1 male 15 to 20 years of age - probably John W Beaman --1 female 40 to 50 - Mary Beaman --3 females 4 to 10 years of age - probably Mary Ann, Catherine, Martha - her 3 youngest children
