Research Notes

Note: @NI12048@
@NI12048@ NOTEThe following letter was written by A.H. Beard, Abbie Driver's husband:
Ashley's Point
April the 8th, 1879
Mrs. Cora L. Ashley
"My dear little sister, I received your very kind letter today and was glad to hear that you all were well."
Dear Cora,
This was written by your beloved sister and my dear wife and was the beginning of a reply to your letter to her, but I am pained to say today she was taken severly sick before finishing it and on the same night the above was written was was never able to finish it. But grew worse and worse until her death relieved her of her suffering which occured May 6th 7:35 p.m. 1879.
She was sick just 3 days. After starting this letter in the evening and getting supper and wanting to milk the cows which had been left unmilked at near dark. We were sitting on the porch. She complained of her bones aching and feeling like a chill. When we went to bed and to sleep and at 11 o'clock she woke up with a hard chill which shook her for an hour with a high fever following it. I wanted to send for a Dr. but she said she did not think it necessary. I gave her a dose of pills the next morning and followed whtn with quinine, but the second morning which was Monday she had another very light chill, if chill at all and then came the terrible fever we never could stop. I sent early Monday morning for Dr. Campbell, he came and gave her Dovers Powders and quinine and by ten o'clock that morning she was out of her head and speechless and remained so until her death. I sent for Dr. Peters but her was in Memphs. We buried her yesterday on the levee by her sister Betty and child and Cameron and our little baby. As the above is the last lines and words she ever wrote, I would like for you to preserve them or send them back to mer. Sister saved some of her hair and is preparing part of it for your mother.
Sister Mary has our little baby - 9months old and is weaning it for me. LIttle Arthur is at home here with me. I did intend carrying Abbie the the little ones to see you all this summer.
You will see that Abbie dated her lette wrong, April 8th for May 8.
I think I will add to the name of the little girl, that of Abbie Julia Abner Elizabeth.
Tell your Ma I would ilke to hear from her and wish that she would come and see us. Tom Ashley is here at my house and well.
Give my love to all the family and write soon.
Yours, A.H. Beard
