Charles was born on March 20, 1760. He married Esther Moffett (Aug. 18, 1765 — abt. 1810), who was the daughter of John and Jane Ledgerwood Moffett. On March 2, 1815, Charles married his second wife, Margaret A. Berry (Aug. 18, 1765-bet. 1848-1849), daughter of David Berry. They had seven children together: David Bell Captive Washington, John, William, James, Jane, Esther, and Rebecca. Five of his children were born in Augusta County before he moved to Rockingham County with his land purchase in 1801. Tax and deed records of Rockingham County show that Charles bought 352 acres in 1801 and 400 more acres in 1806. His home was a large stone house with a brick kitchen on the west side of Edom Road (now route 42), two miles north of Harrisonburg. The farm is known as “The Cromer Place.” Charles died in about 1821. It is believed that he is buried in Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery, as many of his descendants are buried in this cemetery, but there is no remaining gravemarker (they are known to have had wooden gravemakers).
