Henry de Beauchamp was the only son, and the heir of Richard de Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick and his second wife, Isabel Despenser. He was born 22 March 1423/4 at Hanley Castle in Worcestershire.[1] The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography says 22 March 1425. [2] His godparents were Cardinal Beaufort, Humphrey Earl of Stafford, Joan Beauchamp, lady Bergavenny and Philip Morgan, Bishop of Worcester.[2]
In 1434 aged 9 he was married to Cecily Neville, daughter of Richard Neville, Earl of Salisbury and his wife, Alice Montagu. At the same time his sister Anne was married to Salisbury's son, the even younger Richard Neville[2] The children would not have been allowed to cohabit for many years and it was not until February 1444 that Henry and Cecily had a child. The baby, born at Cardiff, was a girl whom they called Anne.[3]
His father, Richard Beauchamp, died in France in 1439 [4]and his mother later in the year. Henry was just 14 and his affairs were put in the hands of a group headed by Ralph, Lord Sudeley and John Lord Beauchamp of Powick.[2]
Henry was a close friend of the King, Henry VI, but the story that the King, even, in jest, created him King of the Isle of Wight is without foundation. He did however receive many awards, notably being created Duke of Warwick in 1444 with precedence second only to the Duke of Norfolk.[5]
Sir Henry (or Harry) Beachamp, Duke of Warwick, died aged 21 at Hanley Castle on June 11 1446 and was buried at Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucestershire.[1]On 12 July 1445 a commission was set up to take into the King's hands all the lands of Henry, Duke of Warwick and keep safe; to enquire of the heir and his age. Sir John Baskerville, Henry Oldecastell Esq, Richard Walweyn Esq, Richard Hackluyt Esq, Robert Clynton, Edmund Morys and the sheriff of Hereford (Thomas Mille). [6]
