John served in the Army, fighting in Korea as a .30 Cal. Machine Gunner. He was awarded many decorations including the Purple Heart. He was injured at least twice during his two enlistments. He also served in Germany. He liked to brag that he golfed with Elvis Presley as part of his duties in Germany.
John loved fishing and golfing. He also often enjoyed watching fishing and golfing on television with his grandson.
He loved his pets and playing cards. John worked for the United States Postal Service for a short time but spent most of his life working in home improvement specializing in home siding.
Towards the end of John's life he became more interested in the Christian Faith and was baptized by his son John Thomas Beaver II immediately before having his spleen removed (~2002) and lived the rest of his life attempting to live a life pleasing to the Lord.
