About 1777-80 Joseph Bowman married Esther Bechtal of Beaver Creek, Washington County, Maryland, the daughter of Samuel Bechtal and Anna Simon. Joseph and Esther moved to Linville Creek, Virginia where he became a prosperous farmer, miller and deacon in the Linville Creek Church. They had 5 children: Elizabeth, Esther, Magdalena, Samuel, and Mary.[2]
