The 1840 census in Paradise Township, York County, shows a household that included three males (aged one each under 5, 10-15, and 30-40), two females under five years and two aged 20-30.[6]

By 1850 the family in Paradise Township had grown to encompass Philip (age 41, farmer on land valued at $2,000), his wife Sarah Beck (38), and their children Lamanda (12), Lucy A. (11), Levi (9), Sarah Elizabeth (7), Leah (5), Reuben (4), Phillip (2), and Daniel (two months).[37] Three more children were born before 1860, when the family in Paradise Township included Philip (age 51, farmer, land valued at $9,000), Sarah (48), Amanda (22), Louisa (21), Levi (20, farmhand), Sarah (18), Leah (16), Ruben (14), Phillip (13), Elisabeth (10), John Oliver (9), Josiah Jacob (7) and Noah Howard (1).[38]

Philip (age 60, day laborer) and Sarah (57) moved to Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (near Abbottstown) with Lizzie (20), Philip (20, farmhand) and Noah (12) before 1870,[126] They had settled next door to their daughter Sarah (27), her husband Sylvester Ebersole (28, carpenter) and their daughter Annie L. (1).[126]

As is traditional, the youngest daughter Elizabeth C. (age 28) remained with her aging parent Philip (70), and Sarah (68—who aged only six years) when they relocated to Spring Grove, York County, before 1880.[127] There they resided next door to their son Reuben (age 33, paper mill worker). his wife Amanda (35), and their children Elma (5), Ada (3) and Vertie (four months).[127]

Philip, successful farmer turned doting grandfather, died 6 March 1881 in York County,[2] and was buried there at Spring Grove Cemetery.[1]

  3. It seems odd that they would marry in Adams County when both parties were living in Paradise Township in York.
  4. Although no birth record has been found to support her parentage, her children's record indicate her maiden name to be Runkel or Runkle and Find-a-Grave has them linked to her. Further records are needed to ensure the correct parents have been identified.
  5. Among the problems with the listed children: (1) Who is the male aged 10-15 on the 1840 census (possibly one of Philip's brothers)? (2) A daughter under age five listed on the 1840 census is missing on Find-a-Grave. (3) The 1850 census shows Daniel (aged two months) as a female, while the 1860 census shows Elizabeth, his reputed twin, as 10.
