Obituary ~ Carroll Walter Beck June 08, 1916 ~ March 21, 2004

Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Decatur County, Iowa

Carroll Walter Beck, 87, of New Virginia, the son of Walter Scott and Catherine Ann Crees Beck, was born June 8, 1916, in Decatur County and died March 21, 2004, at Westview Care Center in Indianola.

He married Luella Marie Smith on Feb. 24, 1940, at Kahoka, Mo. The couple became the parents of a daughter, Carmelita Fae.

Mr. Beck was a farmer and lived in Decatur County until 1985 when a car accident took his daughter's life. His son-in-law, Ivars, had died earlier. This left Mr. and Mrs. Beck, in their late 60s, to care for their 11- and 15-year-old grandsons, Garritt and Gentry. To make things better for the children, Mr. and Mrs. Beck moved into the grandsons’ home in New Virginia. Mr. Beck remained healthy and even cared for his wife Marie for the past four years in their home.

Preceding him in death were his parents; daughter and son-in-law, sisters Ardell Wiseley and Ardis Sander and niece, Lenore Klopfenstein.

Mr. Beck is survived by his wife of 64 years of Westview Care Center in Indianola; grandsons and their families, Garritt Grandberg and his wife, Brandy Grandberg, and their daughter, Gracie Elaine, all of Woodburn and Gentry Grandberg and his wife, Christine Grandberg, and their daughter, Chloe Christine, all of New Virginia.

Other survivors include a niece, Cindy Mayer, of Norwalk and a nephew, Wendell Sander, of California; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon on March 24, Pastor Gary Morris officiating. Musician was Charletta Durell and music selections were In the Garden and Whispering Hope.

Casket bearers were Dale Barnett, Dale Escher, Garritt Grandberg Gentry Grandberg, Stacy McCuddin, Darhol Miller, Don Van Laar and Raymond Van Laar. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery near Grand River.
