Biography

Notes to Researchers

  • James birth date is unknown, but is estimated at about 1760

Proof of Parentage

  • Benjamin Bedford's 1772 Cumberland County, Virginia will named a son James. But was that James Bedford the same one who married Frances Maynard in Mecklenburg County, Virginia in 1786 and appeared in the 1790 Federal census for Granville County, North Carolina? We believe so for the following reasons:
  • The James Bedford enumerated in the 1790 Federal census for Granville County, North Carolina was listed next to Chesley Daniel, who is believed to have been his maternal uncle, brother of Susanna (Daniel) Bedford.
  • On 13 March 1792, Chesley Daniel, John Daniel, Agnes W. Daniel, Jane Daniel, E. Bouldin and Stephen May witness and indenture between "James Bedford eldest son and heir at law of Benjamin Bedford Dec’d and Stephen Bedford youngest son and devisee of the said Benjamin Bedford”. Stephen agreed to pay brother James 225 pounds to convey "all his right title and interest" in the property left to Stephen by their father Benjamin Bedford's 1772 will. This was necessary because of a court ruling that Stephen had inherited only a life estate in the property, because his brother James was Benjamin Bedford’s heir at law (Benjamin's eldest son). Therefore, on Stephen's death, the property would revert to James, or his heirs. This made the property unmarketable to Stephen without the conveyance of Jame's interest. The fact that James Bedford's uncle and neighbor, Chesley Daniel (as well as other Daniels), witnessed the will proves that James Bedford of Granville County, North Carolina was the son of Benjamin Bedford of Cumberland County, Virginia.
  • Note: In 1786 to 1790, Mecklenburg County Virginia was located directly south of Cumberland County and separated from it by two other counties. Granville County, North Carolina bordered Mecklenburg County, Virginia on the south.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Bedford-1322 and Bedford-214 appear to represent the same person because: Merge these files. Benjamin Bedford had one son named James as proven by his will, not two sons named James. These are the same person.

Bedford-1322 and Bedford-214 are the same James Bedford. Benjamin Bedford's 1772 Cumberland County, Virginia will named his children: "...my sons and daughters, James Bedford, William Bedford, Stephen Bedford. Elizabeth Bedford and Sally Bedford ..." Note: One son James, not two.

I am adopting the abandoned Bedford-1322 to ensure the two are merged and to place genealogically valid sources in the surviving profile, Bedford-214, which lacks valid sources for it's claims.
