Philemon Beecher was an American attorney and politician. He represented Ohio in the United States House of Representatives.
Philemon Beecher was born on March 19, 1776, in Kent, Litchfield County, Connecticut Colony, British American. He was the son of Abraham Beecher and Desire (Tolles) Beecher. [1] [2]
Philemon Beecher read law and was admitted to the bar in Connecticut. In 1810, he moved to Lancaster, Ohio, and practiced law there. [1] [4]
In 1803, Beecher was elected as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. From 1805 to 1807, he was reelected three more times. He served as Speaker of the House in 1807. [1] [4]
In 1807, Beecher was an unsuccessful candidate for the United States Senate. He was elected as a member of the United States House of Representatives and represented the 5th district of Ohio in the 15th and 16th Congresses. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1820. In 1822, he was elected as a member of the United States House of Representatives and represented the 9th district of Ohio in the 18th Congress. He was twice reelected and served in the 19th and 20th Congresses. In 1828, he was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection and returned to the practice of law in Lancaster, Ohio. [1] [4]
Philemon Beecher died on November 30, 1839. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio. [2]
