In the 1910 Census, Bertha is listed as the mother of 8 children, 6 living. Children Charles and Rose died before age 10, and children documented through census records include Evaline and Gertrude. Another child, Jeanette Martha (Beck) Stockman, shows these parents' names on her death certificate. Of the three remaining mystery children, one is likely to be Helen Margaret (Beck) Oesting; another may be a George Arthur Beck (commonly known as Arthur), who was listed on Helen Oesting's son's birth record as Helen's brother (and was known personally to Helen Oesting's son, my grandfather, who also reported the family name "Beinlich" to me Oesting-1 12:44, 15 April 2016 (EDT)); and the eighth child born before 1910 and alive as of 1910 is unknown. The absence of a 1900 Census record for George and Bertha complicates this search.

Biography

From the book "Glencoe Illinois",[1] p. 14:

Early German farm settlers included the August Beinlich family, arriving in Glencoe about 1855. After residing in Chicago for a few years, the Beinlichs moved to the Glencoe area and settled on a 20-acre tract west of the railroad tracks adjacent to the Veit Dietterich homestead. The Beinlichs also settled west along Dundee Road, purchasing land at $1.25 an acre. At one time their homestead comprised sixty acres.

FindAGrave.com record associations (see below) claim that Bertha's parents are August Beinlich (Feb. 19 1829 Germany - May 7, 1921 Illinois) and Margaretha Magdalena Moshpeller Beinlich (Dec. 24 1821 Bavaria (Bayern) - Jul. 3 1912 Illinois). Bertha Beck's death certificate shows August Beinlich, born in Germany, as her father, and her mother is "not known".

From History of Cook County, Illinois: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time, 1884:[2]

GEORGE BECK was born in Trenton, N.J., September 1, 1852. When five years of age he came to Evanston, Cook County, with his parents, with whom he farmed up to the age of twenty-six, when he engaged in teaming for himself. He came to Evanston in 1878 and has been engaged there in teaming ever since. He married Miss Bertha Beinlick, of Glencoe, Cook County, February 14, 1878, born October 28, 1859. They have two children, Rosa and Eva, and one child deceased, Charles.

The marriage date given above is February 14, 1878, but Cook County historical records at http://www.ilsos.gov/ give the date of their marriage as January 18 of that year.

In the 1880 US Census,[3] Geo Beck was living in Evanston, Cook, Illinois, a married white male age 28, working as a teamster, born about 1852 in New Jersey. His father and mother were listed as being born in Germany. With him were his wife Bertha Beck, age 20, born in Illinois; sister Mary Beck, age 20, born in New Jersey; son Charlie Beck, age 2, born in Illinois; and infant daughter Rose Beck, born in Illinois.

No 1900 Census has been found for this family, which is a problem in that several children who would probably have been captured on this census have no other documentation to link them to the family, other than hearsay/family legend. The search is ongoing.

In the 1910 US Census,[4]George Beck was living in Evanston Ward 4, Cook, Illinois, a married white male age 56, born about 1854 in New Jersey. His father and mother were listed as being born in Germany. With him were his wife Bertha Beck, age 52, born in Illinois; and daughter Gertrude Beck age 18, born in Illinois. Bertha was listed as the mother of 8 children, 6 living. This implies that Rosa lived until at least 1910, since Charles and Eva would be the children lost. The other children would be Charlie born 1878, Rose born 1880, Evaline born 1883, Gertrude born 1902, and who are the four others? If only we had a 1900 or an 1890 Census for this family. Oesting-1 13:12, 17 March 2016 (EDT)

In the 1920 US Census,[5]George Beck was living in Justice Precinct 2, Harris, Texas, a married white male age 67, born about 1851 in New Jersey. He was employed as a concrete maker at a shop. His father and mother were listed as being born in Germany. With him were his wife Bertha Beck , age 60, born in Illinois; daughter Evaline L Samway, age 37, born in Illinois; son-in-law George R Samway, age 34, born in Illinois; and grandson Jack R Samway, age 4, born in Illinois. George Samway was employed as an electrician at an oil refinery; he listed a father born in England and a mother born in the United States.

In the 1930 US Census,[6]George Beck was living in La Porte, Harris County, Texas, a married white male age 79, born about 1851 in New Jersey. He was employed doing concrete work for a contractor. His father and mother were listed as being born in Germany. With him were his wife Bertha B Beck, age 72, and niece Bessie Monrick, age 46. The Monrick name connection has not yet been found. but could potentially be a perversion of Beinlich. Research is in progress.

Bertha's death certificate states that she was married to George Beck; that her father was August Beinlich, born in Germany; that she was born in "Glencow", Illinois; that she resided in La Porte, Texas at 117 Ohio Street; that she was buried in Cedar Crest Cemetery on October 15, 1932; that she was under the care of Dr. G. A. Lillie MD of Goose Creek, Texas, for chronic cirrhosis, from September 12 until October 13 when she died of a cerebral hemorrhage at 8:25 PM.

Bertha's husband died two years later and was buried next to her in Cedar Crest Cemetery.[7]
