Biography

Richard was born about 1831. Son of Charles Belcher (1803–1838) and Elizabeth Hurst (1805–1882).

"OBITUARY. MR RICHARD BELCHER, One of the Dominion's pioneers passed away on Monday in the person of Mr Richard Belcher, Kaiwarra, Papanui road. With his brother William, who was subsequently drowned at Akaroa, the late Mr Richard Belcher arrived in Wellington in 1857 by the ship Ann Wilson. One of the first jobs he was engaged in was roadmaking over the Rimutakas. Afterwards he went to the gold diggings at Collingwood, Nelson, and then came on to Christchurch..." [1]

"Richard and his brother William [...] were partners with Charles Fairweather in the firm of Belcher and Fairweather, cartage contractors for cartage and construction of telegraphs." [2]

"BELCHER BROTHERS (Arthur Clements, Robert James, and Herbert Reginald Belcher), Farmers, Coutts's Island, Kaiapoi. The property farmed by this firm, consists of 400 acres, leased from Mr. Richard Belcher, of Papanui, father of the partners." [3]

Burial 15 October 1918, Linwood Public Cemetery, Christchurch. Occupation stated as Retired Farmer. Years in New Zealand: 62.

Death Registration: Fourth Quarter (October--December) 1918, Christchurch, Canterbury District, New Zealand. Age at Time of Death: 87 Years.
