DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Richard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Richard:

At first I thought Belcher-280 and Belcher-4242 were the same person but I am convinced after doing some online research and using a little logic that they are two separate persons whose information has been conflated. I found the following online:

https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/collaborate/LVJF-N51 book 4 page 162 Chesterfiled co va will of John 23 jul 1776 to wife (not named) dau Mary, son Edmond, dau Mell Puckett, son Francis, Thomas, and daus Elizabeth and Jane/ will of John proven 1788 extrex Mary Belcher. 24 Feb 1762 edmund Belcher of Lunnenburg Co Va sells to Mark Puckett 194 acres bounded by Thomas Puchett, Thomas Belcher and John Belcher of Deep Creek.

I believe one person is just plain “John Belcher” (no Richard as middle name as middle names were apparently rare in that day and the other is “Richard Belcher (no Dick as middle name but “Dick” is a common nickname for Richard). I believe they were both sons of John Belcher, Sr.

Per Wikitree, John Belcher Sr. married Mary (Frogley) Belcher November 7, 1710. Children of John are listed as James b. 1694, Robert b. 1700 and William b. 1705. Both John and Richard are estimated to have been born about 1710. If this information is correct, then John Belcher Sr. must have had another wife prior to Mary (Frogley) Belcher. I believe John was probably born around 1700 making him the son of the first wife. Richard may have been the son of the first wife or of Mary (Frogley) Belcher since he was born about + or - 1710.

To add to the confusion, both John Belcher Jr. and Richard Belcher married a spouse named Mary, thus two Mary Belchers. As Bartley McRorie has commented, John Belcher Jr.’s wife is listed several places online as being Mary Gooding (1695-1780) and married about 1720 (that is the reason I believe John was born about 1700 and is older than Richard). Richard married Mary Clay about 1732. (https://holleymc.tripod.com/fam00086.htm has the following information: Mary Gooding and John Belcher married 1720, Mary Gooding’s birthdate given as 1695, died 1780. John Belcher birthdate given as 1698)

That brings us to the issue of children. Between Wikitree.com, ancestry.com, and familysearch.org, there are at least 25 children attributed to Mary Clay (if that is true Mary deserves a memorial!). I believe part of those children were actually Mary Gooding’s children and others perhaps wishful thinking on the part of some “researchers”.

I found the following online and seems to match well with the will quoted above for John Belcher.

https://wc.rootsweb.com/trees/146088/I218131/mary-gooding/individual Family (of Mary Gooding) Marriage: Married: John Belcher on Abt 1720 at Virginia. John Belcher: Birth: Abt 1698 in Henrico County, Virginia. Death: 23 Jul 1776 in Manchester Parish, Chesterfield County, Virginia Children: Thomas Belcher: Birth: 28 Jun 1722 in Prince George County, Virginia. Death: Abt 1761 Edmund Belcher: Birth: Abt 1725 in Virginia. Death: Abt 1782 in Charlotte County, Virginia Jane Belcher: Birth: Abt 1729 in Virginia. Death: in Y Mary Belcher: Birth: Abt 1731. Death: in Y Francis Belcher: Birth: Abt 1733 in Henrico County, Virginia. Death: Bef 27 Jun 1782 in Amelia County, Virginia Melvina Belcher: Birth: Abt 1735. Death: in Y Elizabeth Belcher: Birth: Abt 1737. Death: in Y

John Belcher’s death is listed as July 23, 1776. However it appears to me July 13 is the date the will was written but which was not proved until 1788 suggesting he died much closer to 1788. Richard Belcher on the other hand died in 1763—-“WILLIAM CLAY EXECUTOR ,INVENTORY OF RICHARD BELCHER 7-16-1763 AUG 1763 WILLIAM CLAY IS GRANTED ADMIN OF ESTATE OF RICHARD(DECEASED)”

Now in regards to Richard Belcher’s children with Mary Clay Belcher. Richard Belcher and Mary Clay are said to have married about 1732 which sounds right based on their estimated birthdates of about 1710 (or maybe the determination was made the other way around). Anyway, Isham Edwin Belcher and Richard Jr. clearly are Richard’s children and the other listed children born after 1732 very well could be too.

That brings us to another issue—when was Mary Clay married to Thomas Watkins? One source says Richard Belcher married the widow Mary Clay Watkins. However she must not have been married very long to Thomas Watkins if she was married to Richard Belcher at age 22. And online sources give Thomas’s death as 1781. So then we conclude she must have married Thomas Watkins after Richard Belcher died—so sometime after 1763. However her children with the last name Watkins (Mary Curd and John Watkins) appear to have been born in the late 1740s or early 1750s. Did she divorce Richard Belcher? Was the Mary Clay that Richard Belcher married ever a Watkins?

One potential “flaw” that I have found with the above is with John’s will which lists his children. Melvina’s married name (Puckett) is given. However daughter Mary who is believed to have married James Dillon about 1749 is not listed by her married name even though she should have been married by 1776 when the will was written.

Thanks for the work/effort you have put into this! Regarding your potential "flaw" - it may not be a problem! The Dillon/Dillion line(s) are messed up way worse than these two Belchers! (And I am descended from them too!) I have not done the work on the Dillion problems, so my opinion is not worth much here. But Mary not having the correct married name could have all kinds of answers, ranging from in-law problems to "wrong Mary."

I like where you are going here!

Belcher-4242 and Belcher-280 do not represent the same person because: Several of us have been wrestling with this for the past several months, and have decided that they really are two different people, but need a little more time/info to fully separate them, and figure out which the spouse belongs to. So I'm going to reject the merge.

Belcher-4242 and Belcher-280 do not represent the same person because: There is a lot of confusion and conflation around these two. But they are two different people. Merging them would make the confusion/conflation worse! We really need to figure out how to separate the facts surrounding them... Mary Clay was not married to both, but we need to figure out which! The lack of records from that time and place is really frustrating the process of sorting them out. Bottom line: This merge is rejected once again.

Hi Robin-

I proposed this a year or two ago and was told they are most likely brothers but I only had 1 or 2 people reply about trying to figure out if they were and if so did they marry the same woman...there are also 2 Richard Belcher's born about the same time here in NC but one went to IN or IL and the other did not. The profiles became so conflate (?)between the various online sites I don't think anyone honestly knew they could separate each detail. I think the conversation is more detailed on the other profile but I am open to anyone with information. Thanks! Becky

I believe the men weren't the same and want to clarify if the brothers shared a wife as I forgot we were working on this until I noticed the daughter Phoebe (Belshear-Belcher) rejection for merge - I agree the LNAB and other factors aren't proper but I posted comments months ago and don't know how to get a wikitree leader to fix or address the issue so we can finish merging the children or deleting newly created profiles that are duplicates of older established ones. I just try to catch them on GEDCOMparison to stop others from choosing between the two...

I removed the following source because it is for a Richard D. Belcher not the John Richard Belcher:

Becky, thank you for staying on this! I really don't think the brothers shared a wife. But I have no evidence for or against, it's just a hunch. And that's why I have not been more involved in trying to separate these two individuals. I keep hoping to come across something that will help spell it out, like a Will! I know that my late mother's hand written family tree is not sufficient evidence. I wish I could ask her where she did her research on this family.

I noticed under the heading "See Also", the initial three sources were exact except for the page number:
  • Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Volume III, Henrico County - Southside, 1736, Page 367
  • Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Volume III, Henrico County - Southside, 1736, Page 369
  • Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Volume III, Henrico County - Southside, 1736, Page 379

So I combined them into one concise citation:

  • Virginia Colonial Abstracts Volume III, Henrico County - Southside, 1736, Pages 367, 369, 379.

I was adding a resource and fixing the indented paragraphs with the ": " punctuation and thought it helpful. I decided to note it here in case it is unwanted and it could easily be copied and pasted back in the original, longer format. Cheers! Becky Elizabeth

I looked in to it before proposing what I said wasn't a merge but a request to look in to the profiles more after seeing some of the exact sources used on both profiles for things like the marriage to the same woman, links to external profiles of 1 person but it is used for each of these men etc. I have spent some time but not a lot working on my direct ancestors here but was putting it out there hoping for the definitive proof so everyone can have the same information to "know they are not the same". Thank you for the response and I hope to learn more so I can be sure the correct man is listed as my great(gr-gr...) grandfather.

Cheers! Becky

Briefly reviewing this profile I already see a mistake. These are not the same man. There was a John and a Richard two separate and distinct individuals. The evidence is in Becky Simmons original post (below) Virginia Colonial Abstracts; Volume ? (can't read) Henrico County Southside, 1736 page 367, "Paid by Inspectors note, BY John Belcher Jr. FOR Richard Belcher". Now clearly one does not pay himself. This was for John Belcher Jr. for (brother) Richard Belcher. I have not looked at the Abstracts yet, but clearly that says there was a John Jr. and a Richard Belcher. A quick search online John Belcher was born 1798-99, Henrico, VA. died 23 Jul 1776, Chesterfield County, VA., married Mary Gooding 12 Jun 1720. (Family Search). Biography above Richard (deceased) 1759, William Clay Executor of Inventory 16 Jul 1763, and Executor of Estate by Aug 1763. Richard deceased by 1759, and William Clay was Executor to his estate. An Executor is appointed after someone dies to secure all assets, not before. Richard's appointed Executor dated 16 Jul 1776. John dies 23 Jul 1776. That's just a few things I noticed that explains why John and Richard are not the same man. So these two individuals, John and Richard, need to be separated again. I have not looked at all documentation on Belcher family. Currently working on other projects, but will contribute to the Belcher lineage. I am a Belcher descendent.
posted by [Living Marshall]
I am a direct descendent as well and placed some of the things you mentioned on FamilySearch and other sites. The names John and Richard were used a lot in this family (as well as many others) but I learned recently that one of the books relied upon for some of the transcripts was proven to have a lot of inaccuracies and there was confusion with more than a few people including John who some people have moving out of Virginia which wasn't the case for this John but another John Belcher from the same area of VA yet it is published with this John. It is difficult to write it out without speaking and showing so I will see if I can pull up the info deleted out and show what parts I was hoping to clarify.

By the way it began when the other profile looked completely different than it does now. Perhaps reading my comment and looking at the changes made to the other profiles, now three or four on here from the same GED.com upload would help understand my question. I would appreciate a personal message instead of using my name to "exemplify" erroneous behaviour just because I pointed out some inconsistencies and asked a question felt more personal than seeking information for the greater good of what I guess is our shared great grandfather. I had no intention to offend anyone's work and would never intentionally do so. I found two separate brothers by referencing the familysearch page but again it didn't help when the two different pages have copied and pasted or one wrote and the other copied the exact same words for part or all of a written bio- this causes confusion too.

Is there any evidence documenting Richard with middle name of John or vice versa? In records? It was NOT common to have two names or even a middle name in this time period. Middle names did not happen until after 1800's. This is a common mistake in genealogy. "Adding" additional names often leads to more confusion and wrong trees. Persons should be always be presented as they are documented in records. (Just the facts). That way while researching records for either John or Richard it supports who the records represent. When combining identities you cannot define who they represent. Family trees that are handed down often "attach" middle names to define who a parent was (father's first name or even mother's maiden name). Even though they were never documented with them, or given these names initially. Instead added later. In genealogy you should always go by what is documented, in records, facts only, not necessarily what's "handed" down in trees. It can cause further confusion and be incorrect. John may have married Mary Clay before or after brother Richard's death. But this needs to be confirmed and verified. Supported by factual records and proof. There are other Belcher descendants seeking correct info that's been documented and supported. So I propose to remove John from John Richard Belcher unless there is written documentation to support he used both these names simultaneously, or this is the same man. There is no proof of that.

Belcher-4242 and Belcher-280 appear to represent the same person because: I am going to propose this merge for Belcher-4242 and Belcher-280 for several reasons even though it looks like some recent changes were made to the 280 profile to separate the birth year from a possible sibing...but the sources and Bio for both men still say "...Richard John Belcher was born in 1710 in Henrico County, Va.. ". Also both men are connected to the same wife Mary Clay, who was married twice, but only once to a Belcherand the other was to a Watkins. I realize these could be brothers as Mary and her husband are my 8th great grandparents. I have an older family tree with Richard "Dick" Belcher written as his name and his parents listed as Mary Elizabeth Frogley and John D. Belcher.

Another thing to note is the the brand new profile-4242 doesn't list but one spouse and child where as -280 lists the couple had at least 24 children?!?! I have 6 or 7 documented pretty well- but BEFORE dismissing this PLEASE Look at removing connections and sources if not merging because the same findagrave can't work for both men nor can the same wife without explanation; just repeating notes I've seen on profiles. Also the mother now has two profiles and so do several children like Ishom and Phoebe. Okay hopefully this is enough verbiage to start a helpful, insightful conversation where we can all pull and learn more about our relatives!

Becky, Thank you for pointing out some stuff that really needs to be looked at! My initial impression is that they are separate individuals, brothers, but the spouse and children have been confused between them! I see that on Family Search, John is married to Mary Gooding, and Richard to Mary Clay. If this is correct, then it would be a great starting point to clean this up. We all need to dig deeper first though. I would love to hear from the other profile managers, and make this a true collaborative effort! I will not reject this merge yet. Mary is probably not married to both Belchers!

Okay this is back to driving me crazy since you are the only person to reply and I've found some basic things to relate the profiles:

- One profile uses the location Chesterfield County vs the Henrico County here but in 1749 Chesterfield was created from Henrico County.

  • I found this written as a source (details after):

"In 1749, Richrd Belcher was mentined in Henry Clay's will."

"In 1754, Richrd Belcher sold to Peter Blankenship, Amelia County 100 acres bounded by Sinquarter, William Gates, Horsepen Branch and Belcher's old line. The Belcher Line was near the Chesterfield and Amelia County Lines. Both counties are sometimes used as the Belcher's residence....South of Skinquarter Road, 375 acres of land was granted to Richard Belcher in 1754."

"In 1767 Isham Belcher, son of Richard Belecher, sold the land of Richard Belcher, deceased. "William Clay, Executor." Inventory of Richard Belcher July 16, 1763."

"In 1759, James Bailey, Jr. bought 75 acres of land from Peter Daniel. This land is described as adjoining John Skelton's land on the South side of Skinquarter Road. This land was originally part of a patent of 375 acres granted to Richard Belcher in 1754 and was the first piece of land owned by the Bailey Family.
