Robert Carr Belcher was born about 1850 (see research note re: Birth Date) in Virginia to John P. Belcher and Nancy C Blankenship[1]. In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Robert lived with his parents and four siblings in Mercer County, Virginia[2].
In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Robert and Louvenia lived in Rock Township, Mercer County, West Virginia. No one else was living in their household[3].
In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, Robert and Louvenia lived in Barkers Ridge District, Wyoming County, West Virginia. Also in their household were their four children[4].
In the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Robert and Louvenia lived on rented farmland in Center Township, Sebastian County, Arkansas. Robert's occupation was "farmer". Their two youngest surviving children, Naomi and Marvin Asbury, lived with them. Also in their household was Robert's business partner, and future son-in-law, Robert Johnson[5]. Robert Johnson would marry daughter Naomi in 1901[6].
Robert and Louvenia had seven[7][8][9] children together:
Rachel H. (Belcher) Hawks b. 1871 d. 1911[10][11][12]
In September 1850, when his parents' household was enumerated in the 1850 U.S. Census, Robert had not yet been born[20]. He was likely born after September 1850 or in 1851.
A row on a page containing a listing of marriages. In this image, their marriage is the last entry, and their date of marriage is given as 28 December 1869[21].
An application for a marriage license and associated minister's return. In this image, the information provided for the marriage license was given on 28 December 1869 and the minister's return indicates that the ceremony occurred on 5 January 1870[1].
The first image appears to be a listing of marriage information transcribed from marriage license applications and minister's returns. The entry for Robert and Louvenia's marriage within this listing, however, used the wrong date as the marriage date - the date of the marriage license application instead of the date of the ceremony.
