Biography

Samuel Bellamy was born in Virginia in 1784, and when twelve years old moved with his parents, Elisha Bellamy and Nancy Parker, to near Nashville, TN, where he grew to manhood. In 1816 he moved to Switzerland County, Indiana, and in 1852 to Marion County, Iowa where he died, July 6, 1855.

His children by his first wife were:

  • Mary Ann, who married Thomas Carter Johnson
  • Amy, who married Isaac Moler
  • Matilda, who married John Gray

By his second wife he had the following children:

  • Elisha Porter Bellamy
  • Jesse Parker Bellamy
  • John Hill Bellamy
  • James Guinn Bellamy
  • Jane West, who married John Anderson and Alexander May
  • Elizabeth Foster, who married Elijah Bilbo
  • Samuel King Bellamy
  • infant son, Archibald Bellamy

Samuel Bellamy entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Tennessee. After moving to Indiana he was a charter member of the Mt. Zion congregation in Switzerland County, serving as a circuit preacher covering a wide territory of southeastern Indiana.
