Biography

Priscilla Bennett was born October 5, 1631, in Weymouth, Dorset, England, presumably a daughter of Edward Bennett and his wife Elizabeth Edgington, who immigrated from England and settled in Weymouth, Massachusetts, in 1636. Her father resided in Weymouth for seven years and then became one of the original proprietors of Rehobath, Massachusetts. [1] On October 5, 1651, in Rehoboth, Bristol county, Massachusetts, Priscilla married William Carpenter, christened on Christmas Day, 1631, in the parish of Shalbourne, Berkshire (that part now in Wiltshire), England, a son of William Carpenter, born about 1610, probably in Amesbury, Wiltshire, England, who was a co-founder of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. [2] Priscilla and William were the parents of at least four children:

  • John Carpenter, born October 19, 1652, in Rehoboth, died 1695, in Woodstock, Windham county, Connecticut, married Rebecca Redway, in 1676
  • William Carpenter, born June 20, 1659, in Rehoboth, died March 10, 1718, in Attleboro, Bristol county, Massachusetts, married Elizabeth Robinson, in 1685
  • Priscilla Carpenter, born July 24, 1661, in Rehoboth, died 1745, in East Greenwich, Kent county, Rhode Island, mrried Richard Sweet
  • Benjamin Carpenter, born October 20, 1663, in Rehoboth, died April 18, 1738, in Coventry, Tolland county, Connecticut, married Hannah Strong, in 1691

Priscilla (Bennett) Carpenter, died October 20, 1663, in Rehoboth, Bristol county, Massachusetts and is buried in the Newman Cemetery, in East Providence, Providence county, Rhode Island. In 1664, William Carpenter took, as his second wife, Miriam Sale(s) a daughter of Edward Searle/Sale(s) of Rehoboth.

Researcher's Notes:

From Find A Grave: She was possibly the daughter of Edward Bennett and Elizabeth ?Edgington? Bennett. (There is a marriage of an Edward Bennett and Elizabeth Edington at Weymouth, Co.Dorset on Oct 27,1622) The connection has not been proven with certainty, though it was reported in Descent from 79 Early Immigrant Heads of Families (Elston, 1962-1971). For now, I have entered links to these possible parents, but this may not be correct. [3]

Bennett-2510 and Bennett-305 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates, same husband

This Hannah clearly doesn't belong married to Joseph Carpenter - its a complete mess. I have corrected her incorrect children. The only Bennet married to a Carpenter belongs to the Rehoboth Carpenters. I am going to place here over there, change the name and merge away this messed up profile.

Carpenter-4003 and Bennett-2510 are not ready to be merged because: Some untangling work needs to be done before merging

In the History and Genealogy of the Carpenter family it is noted that on apr 21, 1659 Joseph married Hannah dau of William Carpenter of Rehoboth Mass. She was born In Weymouth Mass and it is figured that she is a 2nd cousin to her husband. Where did the "Bennett" come from?
Bennett-8404 and Bennet-553 appear to represent the same person because: Same person slightly diff spellings on last name
Are you reconciling?

Carpenter-4003 and Bennett-2510 are not ready to be merged because: Dates of birth and death for Hannah and birth dates for some of her children - some of whom are the same and others different between the two Hannahs. Let's reconcile before merging.
