Biography

Anne was born about 1632 in England and later went to Holland.[1] The large contingent of English Dissenters in Holland might be a clue to her origins. She passed away before November 29, 1708.

John Goode’s second wife was Anne Bennett, and they had twelve children. John Goode owned 688 acres in Henrico and 2,270 acres in Chesterfield County. Ann Bennett's parents are unknown. She was not the daughter of Governor Bennett.

John and Ann Goode’s children were: Robert who married the widow Elizabeth Curd daughter of Thomas Branch and Elizabeth Archer; Katherine who married John Roberts and then Gilbert Gee; Elizabeth who married about 1699 John Blackman, Sr. son of William Blackman and Dorothy Deeley; John who married Mary Harris daughter of Thomas Harris and Mary Field Jefferson (John Goode owned Falls Plantation and was killed by Indians); Thomas; Frances who married John Elam and then William Harris, Sr.; Susanna; Joseph; Anna; Ursula who married Samuel Branch son of Christopher then she married Walter Scott, then John Harris in 1729; Mary, and Martha.[2]

It is suspected that Ann's maiden name may have been Bennett, as that name shows up as Christian names in later generations. She predeceased her husband as Ann was not mentioned in John's will drawn November 1708, at which time four of their children appear to have still been minors.

Aunt of U. S. President Thomas Jefferson [possibly through his father, Peter, Anne's brother,][3] The reference is actually to Martha Jefferson, wife of Bennet Goode, John and Anne's grandson.

Research Notes

The same profile with Anne's birth "after 1662" had her marriage to John in 1666. Anne is not his first wife, so a significant age difference would not be that unusual (although a 40-year difference is a bit extreme), but she could not have had a child so young. A birth year of about 1645/50 would be a better guess considering a marriage in 1666 to someone born c1620/30, but it is incompatible with parents born in the 1640s.

Anne was definitely not the child of Governor Bennett. His Anna married Theodorik Bland and could not have been simultaneously married to John Goode. John Goode's wife Anne, presumed Bennett due to subsequent naming patterns, appears to have arrived in Virginia from Holland where she had fled from her native England.

Bennet-502 and Bennett-6104 appear to represent the same person because: There are zero sources on Bennet-502, there being no evidence to support almost no information, the merge should proceed. Use spelling of Bennett to agree with father.

merge completed. dates need research (born after 1662, which is marriage date shown for profiles attached as her parents [born in the 1640s] does not work with her marriage to John is shown as 1666 & a profile attached as her daughter with a birth year of 1665).
