White County Democrat, Published Weekly - Monticello, Indiana - Friday, May 31, 1918

"Mother Dies Before Daughter is Buried" (Funeral of Both Will be Held at the Same Time in M.E.Church Thursday) Mrs. Mary Isabel Bennett died Monday at midnight at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Claudius Ireland on West Washington street. She had been ill with pneumonia for several weeks, and the last few days her condition had become steadily worse. She passed away with the beautiful words of God on her lips and suffering no pain. The death is especially sad, because of the death of her daughter, Mrs. Hadassah Clark, which occurred just a few days ago at her home at Matimora, Ohio. Mrs. Bennett had never been informed of the illness of her daughter, and often spoke of her, and of the child which was born to Mr. and Mrs. Clark, and which lived only a few hours. Miss Mary Isabel Johnson was born August 11, 1855 in White County and has lived here practically all her life. She was united in marriage to Phineas Bennett, who died three years ago Decoration Day. To this union were born six children, three of them preceeding her in death. Mrs. Harry Clark, a daughter dying last Saturday. She leaves three children, Mrs. Zula Ireland of Monticello, Harley Bennett of California, and Earl Bennett of Bloomington. One brother also survives, Harley Johnson, of California. Mrs. Bennett had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ireland, on West Washington street, for the last two years. Mrs. Bennett was one of the best beloved women of the town, and leaves many sorrowing friends and relatives. She was an ardent member of the Methodist church, joining when she was a child. Mrs. Hadassah Clark died Saturday at her home in Matimora, Ohio. The body was brought here Sunday evening on the 6:00 train and taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Rothrock. A child was born to Mr. and Mrs. Clark about a week ago at their home in Ohio, which lived only 5 hours. Hadassah Bennett was born Oct. 25, 1892 at Monticello, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phineas Bennett. She attended the schools here, and graduated from the local high school. She had also attended De-Psuw University in Greencastle for one year. She was united in marriage to Harry Clark, Dec. 28, 1916, at Boston Maxx, but they had lately made their residence in Ohio. Mrs. Clark was a devoted member of the Methodist church, and had always been a great church worker, taking a great interest in all the affairs of the church. She was one of the popular young women of the city and had many friends here, who were shocked to learn of her death. The funeral of Mrs. Bennett and her daughter was expected to be held at the M.E.Church Thursday 10:00 am.
