(from various members of the Bennett family, from documents held in Gravesend Local Studies Library) William was reassigned to his uncle William Thomas Bennett when Alexander died in 1820. However William Thomas Bennett had served his apprenticeship as a cordwainer, and was trading as a slopseller in about 1820 (slopseller, a dealer in ready made clothes). Our William appears in a local trade directory in 1823/24 as living in Milton next Gravesend and was also trading as a slopseller.
William was admitted as a Freeman of the Borough of Gravesend on 26 March 1826, when he was appointed Sergeant at Mace.
He held a number of jobs, being shown in 1841 as the town gaoler, in 1851 as a schoolmaster, and 1861 as a letter carrier.
William was 'Town Sergeant' in 1832 when his son Robert was baptised, and was still shown with this occupation when Alexander was baptised in 1834. In 1836, when his son William was baptised, he was a Mace bearer, and when his son George was baptised in 1841, he was the town gaoler. His occupation switched back to Sergeant at Mace in 1848, when his son Samuel was baptised.
