Biography

Ann was baptised on 28 October 1794 at Spalding in the midst of the crisis in which Henry Bennett, her father, lost all his drainage works and became bankrupt. She was adopted or cared for by her Godparents, the Livesay family, hence her middle name. Richard Livesay painted the portrait of Henry Bennett still held by the family, around 1789 when Henry married. At that stage Henry was quite well-to-do and able to afford to patronise Livesay. Livesay also painted the son Henry and this was probably done shortly before Livesay died in 1823. Ann Livsay Bennett married Robert William Millns of Long Sutton in 26 June 1839 at Holbeach. In 1841 Pigot’s Directory Robert Millns was a wine and spirit merchant of The Rose Inn in High Street, Long Sutton. In 1861 Robert W Mills 47 was a wine and spirit merchant living at Whittmore Street Whittlesey with Ann L 66 and a servant Charles Bennett Lloyd remembered her well; “a disagreeable old lady.” [[CB Lloyd notes] They apparently had no issue. Ann died on 28 February 1871 leaving her estate, valued under £50. to her husband Robert William Millns wine and spirit merchant of Whittlesey. He was a wine and spirit merchant of Whitmore Street, Whittlesey in 1871, aged 57, widower, with a housekeeper Eliza Rollitt 29 and a servant. [census] Robert married secondly Eliza Rollitt late in 1871 at Grantham, bap 24 July 1842 daughter of Charles Rollitt and Eliza Beck.
