Elias Townsend Deputy was born 6 Sept 1814 in Sussex County, Delaware, to parents John T. and Esther (Townsend) Bennett.^[1]

Occupation

Elias and his wife Elizabeth were in a multi-generational line of farmers who owned and operated what is locally known as the Deputy-Bennett Family Farm, established by patriarch James S. and Abigail (Russell) Deputy in the early 1800s. The farm had originally been fully owned by Elizabeth Bennett's father, James S. Deputy; at his death in 1830, ownership of the farm was evenly distributed among his 6 children. Elizabeth and her husband Elias regained a portion of the farm by deed from her brother Nathanial Deputy in 1839; and eventually regained full ownership of the property as each of Elizabeth's siblings died from 1860 to 1864. In 1869, Elias died, and farm ownership passed on to his widow Elizabeth, who managed the farm until she sold it to her son John W. Bennett in 1873. Today the farm is located along the Coastal Highway just south of Argo Corners, DE.
