Biography

Private John Bennett served in the United States Civil War.

John Bennett was born in 1839 at Stokes County, North Carolina, the son of William Bennett and Martha Nelson. [1]

He married on 31 Jan 1858 at Stokes County, North Carolina to Elizabeth Flinchum [2] and it is not known if they had any children.

John served in the Civil War with Company H of the 53rd North Carolina Infantry Regiment, [3] fought at the Battle of Gettysburg where his right hand and forearm were wounded in action, and applied for a veteran's pension in 1903. [4]

He passed away on 03 Jan 1915 at Dillard, North Carolina., [5] and was buried at the Fagg-Bennett Cemetery in Stokes County, North Carolina. [6]

Research Notes

No birth, marriage, census, or death records have been found for any children born to John and Elizabeth.

The only source showing middle initials for John is the 1850 census. His Find A Grave memorial shows a middle initial "H" which is not inscribed on his gravestone.

John's occupation was listed as carpenter on his death certificate.
