Biography

Richard Henry Bennett was born in Appling County, Georgia in 1826. He was the son of Henry Bennett and Margaret Sheffield[1], and the grandson of Richard Bennett, a Revolutionary Soldier originally from North Carolina who settled in Georgia.

The Bennett family were among the earliest settlers in Georgia. Mr. Bennett married Rachel Westberry, daughter of Moses John Westberry and Matilda Arnett in 1847 in Wayne County. They had 12 children together.

On April 18, 1862, he enlisted into the Co. "K", 54th Volunteer GA Infantry and within time was promoted to the rank of Captain. After the War, he returned home to his young family in Wayne County in what is now present day Pierce County.

Richard Bennett, an Elder in the Primitive Baptist Church, was one of the key figures in the schism of 1871/72 in the Alabaha River Association. As a result of this division over doctrine, Elder Bennett formed a faction called the Bennetites, the others being the Crawfordites.

He purchased a large farm in this part of Ware County and later established and built the original Rome Primitive Baptist Church in 1884

The oldest marked grave at Hephzibah is that of his infant granddaughter, Tillulah Chatam Bennett, who died in 1875.

Most likely church services were being held on these grounds in what was known as an arbor church.

Richard Bennett died on Feb. 16, 1891 at age 64. [2]
