Biography

Richard Bennett was born about 1710 in Virginia it is believed.

Richard married Mary Ann Utie in Virginia and from Virginia[1]

Richard and Anne Bennett were probably originally from Virginia, as family descendants did not seem to realize that they had lived for many years in North Carolina and documented through their writings that the family was from Virginia. Their friends and neighbors were from Surry Co. and other southern Virginia counties, but at this writing it has not been determined exactly where, nor has it been proven who their parents were.

The first time there is a record is when on 11 Aug 1741 Richard received 200 acres of land in Edgecombe Co., North Carolina on lower side Buffalo Branch from King George II, paying four shilling proclamation money for every hundred acres yearly, cultivating three acres for every hundred within three years. They made their home here. In 1746, Edgecombe Co. was divided and the part in which they lived became Granville Co; in 1764 Granville Co was divided and they lived in the section that became Bute Co. In 1779 Bute Co. was abolished and their plantation on Buffalo Creek was in Warren Co. Thus, their home was always in the same place, but records of them are found in all four counties. We also find records in Halifax Co., where Richard had some land. Richard was probably born in 1700-1710 and died in Bute Co. about August 1764. Anne died in Warren County about 1779-1780.

They had ten children, five boys and five girls, as follows:

  1. Christian Bennett b ca 1731 probably in Virginia and died in Union County, SC about 1803. She married Absolom Langston, Alexander Fairborn.
  2. Sarah Bennett b ca 1733 probably in Virginia and died after 1810 in Laurens Co. SC. She married Solomon Langston.
  3. Richard Bennett Jr b ca 1734 probably in Virginia and died in May 1823 in Warren Co., NC. He married Sylvia Smart.
  4. Mark Bennett b ca 1738 probably in Virginia and died in Montgomery Co., NC after 1810. He married Jemima.
  5. William Bennett was b about 1741 in Virginia or North Carolina and died about 1826 in Pendelton Co., SC. He married Sarah Unknown and Abigail Gee
  6. Moses Bennett was b in Edgecome Co. NC about 1743. No further record has been found.
  7. Martha Bennett was b about 1746 in Granville Co., NC.
  8. James Bennett b ca 1749 in Granville Co., NC. He d Spartanburg Co., SC Oct 1825.
  9. Anne Bennett b ca 1751 Granville Co. probably died before 1780 as Richard Sr. willed land to Amey, Martha and Anne but only Amey and Martha claimed the land and sold it to Richard Jr.
  10. . Amey Bennett was b ca 1753 in Granville Co. NC She married John Capps. She died in Guilford Co., N.C. in 1827.

  • Note that various records show Richard Bennett and Anne Bennett in North Carolina in Edgecombe County, Granville County, Bute County and Warren County. Their home remained in the same place but the counties were created at different times: part of Edgecombe County became Granville County in 1746. In 1764 Granville County was divided and Bute County became the name of the area where they lived. in 1779 Bute County was abolished and the Bennett plantation on Buffalo Creek was in Warren County. Their are, also, records for them in Halifax County which was once part of Edgecombe County and where Richard owned some land.
