John Bennett 1626 -1691

From Dorothy Bennett Inderkum (1926-1998) (Author) and David Kendall Martin, FASG (Editor), “The John Bennett Family of Stonington, Connecticut,” (Church Hill, Maryland: Mouse House Ink, 2000), 1:

“The origin of John Bennett is unknown… The oft repeated proposition that he was a son of Edward Bennett of Weymouth and Rehoboth, Massachusetts, has no evidence one way or the other. It is not even considered by Robert Charles Anderson, F.A.S.G., in his important ‘The Great Migration, Immigration to New England 1634-1635 (New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston, 1999) 253-4.”

NOTE: The citation above was made in 1999 or earlier when the internet did not offer the research resources which it now does. Therefore it should be viewed as a statement of the time and not as a viable assertion.

How do we reconcile the seemingly self-contradictory facts that our bio says "we don't know who his father is" (etc) and yet we have him linked to parents? Or at least to a mother, who is married to a husband with the same LNAB?

Separately, I'm worried about Bennett-family conflations between Virginia and New England ie between the notional father of THIS John Bennett, and the (unrelated?) Edward Bennett here:
