Biography
Louis Eustace Bennett
SS Philadelphia
Louis Eustace Bennett was born Penzance Cornwall England, the son of Johnson Vivian Bennett and Margaret Jane Richards. There is no birth Registration entry in any county in England, nor is Louis in the 1901 England and Wales Census. On April 30, 1910 he arrived at Ellis Island New York, with his mother and sister, Elizabeth Jane Bennett aboard the SS Philadelphia from Southampton England.[1]
SS Philadelphia Manifest Transcription
On arrival at Ellis Island the SS Philadelpha's manifest was submitted to the authorities and it states his mother, Margaret Jane (Richards) Bennett is going to her son inlaw and daughter, Mr & Mrs Jacka in Ohio , his sister, Elizabeth Jane Bennett is going to her brother inlaw Mr Jacka, in Ohio, and Louis, who's age is given at 22 is also going to his brother inlaw, Mr Jacka in Ohio.[2]
Still with the stated age of 22, Louis applied for a marriage licence and this gives a month and day of birth of August 18 and the age of 22, the document gives his father as J L Bennett and mother Margaret Jane Richards, at the top left hand corner of the document is printed "Do Not Publish". On June 17, 1912 he married Mary Grylls Jacka, the daughter of William Jacka and Mary Hannah Bennett, the later who's mother was Margaret Jane Bennett and also Louis's Stated mother.[3] Louis and Mary's first child Florence Pauline was born 8 months later in February 1913, Donald Vivian was to follow in May 1915 and Rose Mary in October 1917.
December 8, 1916, Elizabeth Jane Bennett died, on her death certificate, Louis was the informant and he has stated J S Bennett is the father and Margaret Jane Richards as the mother. Elizabeth Jane died of meningitis with associated infection and Elizabeth died unmarried.[4]
WW1 brought the inclusion of America in 1917 and Louis has put on his draft card he was born August 18, 1893,[5] he never served in the conflict of WW1 and his 4th child, Margaret Jean was born 1920.
Margaret Jane Richards died October 23, 1925, but it was not Louis that was the informant for the death certificate as would be expected, but his married sister Mary Hannah (Bennett) Jacka and she has stated correctly that Margaret's husband was Johnson Vivian Bennett and parents of James Richards and Mary Duncalf, Margaret died of Urememia, basically kidney failure.[6]
A fter1930 Louis and Mary have divorced and by 1940 Louis has a new wife called Catherine.[7] By December 1941 America has been drawn into WW2 by the attack on Pearl Harbor. On Louis's WW2 draft card he has again given the birth date of August 18, 1893 but with the wife of Catherine,[8] this marriage was to last until about 1947 and once again he has divorced.
About 1948 louis married another divorcee, Dorothy in Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio. Louis worked as Superintendent for the Edison Company until his death on November 15, 1958, his obituary states that he was 17 when he first arrived in America from Penzance Cornwall, giving a birth year of 1893.[9]
