Biography

He married Mary Oldham of Norfolk and he ran a first class ironmongery at Market Place, Long Sutton, Lincs. In 1841 Pigot’s directory George was an ironmonger and brazier and tinman and agent for Ransome’s Agricultural implements, in Market Place, Long Sutton. In the 1841 census he was an ironmonger in Market Place, Sutton St.Mary, living with Mary his wife and George 10 and John 5 and a Sarah Clarke 50 independent, his apprentice Walter Inew 15 and two servants. Next door was Edward Bright 35, also an ironmonger, his wife Elizabeth 25, Eliza Oldham 20 independent and John Bright aged 1. By the 1851 census he had his son John Frederick assisting plus two servants and a charwoman. One of the servants was a Susan Barton, aged 26. In 1861 he was also an insurance agent for Phoenix Fire and Britannia Life. In 1861 he was an ironmonger in Sutton St.Mary, Long Sutton aged 59, living with his apprentice Richard Peele 17 and a servant Louisa Codd 27 from Long Sutton. His wife was staying with their son in Coventry that night, and probably took with her the second servant, Eliza Codd 23, also from Sutton St.Mary. He was retired at 36 High Street, Long Sutton, in 1871 census, and died there on 20 May 1871. At Long Sutton there is a tablet on the interior wall of the church “In loving memory of George Carter Bennett who was 34 years church warden of this parish and ever zealous in all good works for the welfare of the town and neighbourhood. He lived a devoted Christian life, dispensing kindness and charity around him and died universally beloved and regretted on May 20th 1871 aged 69 years.” In his will, made 7th December 1865, George mentions his son Rev. George Bright Bennett of Rumorne, Cheshire, clerk, his brother in law Frederick Jennings Oldham and wife Mary, his late son John Frederick Bennett and daughter in law Ellen Maria Bennett and daughter in law Sarah Elizabeth Bennett.
