Geneviève Benoit was born on 28 February 1766 in the Province of Massachusetts Bay, where her parents Joseph Benoit and Anne Thibodeau had been deported in 1755.
After the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763, the Acadians detained in the Anglo-American colonies were finally free to leave. On 1 March 1765, James Murray, Governor of the Province of Quebec, issued a proclamation offering free land to new immigrants. Between 1765 and 1775, 1306 Acadians deported to New England immigrated to Quebec. [1]
The family boarded the Sloop Polly that left Boston on 21 July 1766 and arrived at the port of Québec on 31 August 1766. [1]
Aboard the Sloop Polly:
Joseph Benoit, 34
Anne Thibodeau, his wife 30
Marie Benoit, daughter, 4
Firmin Benoit, son, 2
Geneviève Benoit, daughter, 6 months
Geneviève was baptized on 6 September 1766 at Notre-Dame-de-Québec. [2] It was noted in the baptism record that Geneviève and her family had recently arrived from Boston where she had been privately baptized at birth.
Geneviève died on 28 May 1804 in Yamaska, Bas-Canada. [4]
