Biography

Butt suggests that he was born 1800 at Main Gut, NL, which is at the mouth of the St. George's River and also known as Le Grand Barachois. He claims that he was baptized as Olivier-Sebastien and went by his second name as did his uncle Jean-Sebastien Benoit.

Death records show him as aged 94 at time of death and born Cape Breton, NL. however as his family was living in Newfoundland by that time, he might likely have been born in Newfoundland. Possibly he was widow when he married in 1835 to Theotiste Catherine Jesso. They lived Benoit's Cove and later he moved to West Bay on the Port au Port Peninsula. He died Black Duck Brook, which is also on the Port au Port Peninsula. He died of old age.
