Joseph est né à St-Michel de Yamaska, Québec le 21 mar 1823. Il était le fils de Joseph Benoit et Marie Martin.
Il épousa Adelaide Plantier le 17 avril 1855 à l'Eglise St-Joseph, Chatham, Kent, Ontario.
