Mordeai was the first of his lineage to move from the Maryland area to Georgia. According to the book "The Georgians: Geneology of Pioneer Settlers" by Jeannette Holland Austin, page 28 states: On 3/5/1789 Mordecai Benton in Jackson County, Georgia sells to William George 575 acres on Turkey Creek on the north side of the Oconee River, formerly in Franklin County. He was one of the first pioneers to settle in Georgia since Georgia became a state one year earlier in 1788.
