Notes on Dates

"Anne Bernard was born circa 1644 at Purton, Gloucester, VA. She died on 14 April 1698." - statement, with no source citation, from Anne Bernard, "Our Royal, Titled, Noble, and Commoner Ancestors and Cousins" (website, compiled by Mr. Marlyn Lewis, Portland, OR; accessed September 10, 2015)

  • birth about 1635 is based on parents' marriage in November 1634 & her marriage by 1653; in England based on parents emigration around 1646
    • changed profile's date/place from 1644/Isle of Wight county, Virginia - that cannot be right with m by 1653[1]
  • marriage 1653, Virginia is based on mother's 1653 letter & entry for her husband in Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography (he arrived in Virginia 1652, so they were married in Virginia either 1652 or 1653, assuming she arrived with parents circa 1646, which I think is a safe assumption)
    • from her mother's profile: In 1653 Mrs. Anne Bernard wrote to Walter Brodhurst, of Northumberland county, a letter, in which she refers to her daughter, Anne Smith."[2]
    • changed/will change marriage from 1680 (her mother refers to her as Anne Smith in 1653; her son by John Smith, also John Smith, married Feb. 17, 1680)
  • citation needed for death date and place: April 14, 1698 (#Lewis), Purton, Gloucester county, Virginia (given as birth location by #Lewis)

Biography

: Richard Bernard, of Petsworth, Buckinghamshire, was born in 1618, and married Anne Corderoy, born in 1622; they were licensed to be married at St. Andrews-in-the-Wardrobe November 24, 1634(1). Bernard's arms were a bear rampant(2). The family is found in York county in 1647, and that year Richard Bernard had a lease of Pryor's plantation above Yorktown.

In 1661, "Anna Bernard, now of Purton(3), in Petsoe Parish", Gloucester county parish was doubtless named in honor of the Bernard family), sold Pryor's plantation, purchased by her in 1652 of Thomas Edwards, of the Inner Temple, London, gentleman, and Margaret, his wife, one of the two daughters of William Pryor, deceased; and the deed is witnessed by Francis Bernard and John Smith. Mrs. Anne Bernard was guardian of the orphans of Col. Samuel Matthews, of Warwick county; and in 1670 Major John Smith was a guardian. In 1653 Mrs. Anne Bernard wrote to Walter Brodhurst(4), of Northumberland county, a letter, in which she refers to her daughter, Anne Smith.

Husband

following from Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Lyon Gardiner Tyler (p 326):
John Smith came to Virginia about 1652, married Anna Bernard, daughter of Richard Bernard, of "Purton," in Gloucester county. He was major in 1665, lieutenant-colonel before 1674, and sided with Sir William Berkeley in 1767 against Bacon. His son, John Smith, of Purton, married Mary Warner, daughter of Colonel Augustine Warner.

Anne was born in 1634.

Anne was born about 1636. She passed away in 1698.

She's is the wife of my 8th Great Grand Uncle. She married my 8th Great Grandfather Major Lawrence Smith's brother John Smith 12 Sept 1627 - 17 Feb 1680. In "Early Colonial Settlers of Southern Maryland and Virginia's Northern Neck Counties " Ann Bernard is anntonated as John's wife. Born bef 1636 in York Co. Virginia and died 14 April 1698 in Purton Parish, Gloucester Co. Virginia at 62 yrs of age. John & Anne had only one child, John Smith (Jr) who was born 1654 and died 14 April 1698. Looks like mother and son died the same day. Indian's or disease.

John Smith above was along with Anne Corderoy Bernard were Guardian of Col. Samual Matthew of Warwick Co. children. So Richard Bernard's wife was close to John Smith and trusted him immensley. When her husband died she moved to England a trusted John Smith to handle her affairs in the Colonies. Sometimes , her daughter Anne married John Smith, my 8th Great Grand Uncle.

Bernard-3062 and Bernard-102 appear to represent the same person because: Please agree to merge these duplicate profiles. Thanks!

At first glance it appears that Richard Bernard-703 is not her correct father. I've proposed a merge of the two profiles for her mother Ann Cordray.

Shouldn't her Last Name at Birth be Bernard? Please provide a better source than Ancestry for the fact that she married Christopher Lawrence Smyth-713. Thanks!
