According to a very well-researched piece on Daniel Gaines:[1]
"... the marriage date of (1662 for Daniel) Gaines is derived from the record whereby John Catlett turned over the property of his half brother’s children to Gaines in January 1662 in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia. The 1662 event signaled a recent marriage to the children’s mother thus identifying her as Margaret, the widow of Ralph Rouzee. Tradition has called her Margaret Bernard, because the couple named a child Bernard. However there are no corroborating records supporting this conclusion. From this January 1662 date it is reasonable to conclude the issue of the Gaines-(?) Rouzee union were born no earlier than late 1663." [During this era, January 1662 was towards the end of the year; after 25 March the year became 1663.]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Margaret by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Margaret:
Could you please clarify why these two are not ready to merge? Both are weakly sourced, but the former and aka surnames match, as well as the birth date/place, and the death place. The death dates are close.
WikiTree creates the comment ANY TIME that a match is made. Just because I wasn't ready to merge at the time that I found the match does not mean that they should not be merged.
I would think it should be changed to Unknown. I don't know if you would want to put Bernard in the OLN field. We're having a discussion about that as it relates to Medieval profiles in an effort to avoid anyone creating a new profile after we've changed the name...
There appears to be mixed opinion about that approach. We used to follow that practice at PGM, but then someone made a good case against it (which I can't now remember...), and we stopped using the OLN field for that, and explained it in the narrative. Until someone reminds me why we shouldn't do that, I'm fine with using the OLN field that way.

Sorry I was out of town and did not respond....the name Bernard comes from research done by several people. https://archive.org/details/marksbarnettfami00pett/page/n317/mode/2up Indicates that Margaret was the daughter of Francis Bernard of Kingsthorpe, Nottinghamshire, England. There is a citation for that information. https://archive.org/details/notablesouthernf01arms/page/n163/mode/2up?q=Gaines Armstrong, Zella, comp. , Notable Southern Families: Volume 1 , Chattanooga, Tennessee: The Lookout Publishing Company (1918) , 77, Google Books (Digital Library). Also indicates the name in her research. As does Wilson, York Lowry , A Carolina-Virginia Genealogy , Aldershot, England: Gale and Polden (1962) , 210
Unfortunately, neither of those sources provide any proof of her parentage. From the bit of research I did on her, the only basis people have used for her to be a Bernard is that she named a son Bernard. I located a 6-page paper analyzing Daniel's interactions and court/land records. It concludes that his wife Margaret was the widow of Ralph Rouzee and that Daniel and Margaret likely married circa 1661 (based on court records of Jan 1662 when property transferred from John Catlett, the half-brother of Ralph Rouzee deceased, to Daniel Gaines, the children's new stepfather). Edited to add: You can view the paper here: http://www.frenchfamilyassoc.com/FFA/CHARTS/Chart036/DanielGaines.pdf
Also, on Daniel's profile is a note: "The information on Daniel Gaines contained in Notable Southern Families, by Zella Armstrong, Lookout Publishing Company, Chattanooga, TN, 1918 is incorrect."
Please, please, everyone read the source 'Daniel Gaines of Colonial Virginia' by Margaret Amundson. I read this piece years ago, and it was an eye-opener. Made me realized what a well seasoned and intelligent person Ms. Amundson is.
Daniel Gaines possibly is my line through a grandson George Gaines who married Elinor Brown. Their daughter Martha married John Pryor in VA, and he later became a member of the House of Commons of North Carolina. Martha [maiden name of Gaines has not been proven per DAR] Pryor can be used for membership in DAR and SAR as she furnished supplies for the American Army/Rev War.
According to this page, Margaret married, first, Daniel Gaines and secondly, Ralph Rowzee. Her maiden name is uncertain.
