Disputed Identity and Associations

Identity. The identity of Edward Berry (Berry-1317) who died Salem 7 November 1684 can not be the same man who was born 1574 at England. (He would have been 110 years of age at the time of his death.)

Cole-12288 18:12, 19 November 2023 (UTC) Birth date has been changed to reflect a more reasonable birth date.

Associations. No historical records and analysis is shown to association an Edward Berry, born 1574, is the same man who married by 1668 to PGM Elizabeth Hardy (abt.1623-aft.1677), widow of PGM Roger Haskell (bef.1614-bef.1667). Such a man, born 1574, would have been have been aged 94 at the time of that marriage, and 50 years her senior.

Biography

Edward Berry married Elizabeth Hardy.

Elizabeth (Hardy) married Edward Berry previous to October 10, 1668 as on this date deeds were recorded transferring to one another certain rights including the Gafford property, "land and housings at Gafford's point, 18 acres, a point almost entirely surronded by water; on the northeast only by land of Osmund Trask." Edward Berry was a seaman and weaver. He had a son, Edward, also a seaman and weaver, who came from Painton, Devon, England about 1677 (conflicting dates 1668 and 1677. RMS), and resided in Salem from that year until 1716. Edward the elder moved to Marblehead in 1679 and stayed there until he went to live with his stepson, Mark Haskell.

Research Notes

Birth. A prior version of this profile reported, "Edward Berry born 1574 in England married Elizabeth Hardy." (See Disputed Identity.)

1905 account. According to The Essex Antiquarian (1905), Elizabeth Hardy's second husband, Edward Berry, was a seaman and weaver. This Edward "had a son, Edward, who came to Salem from Painton, Devon, England, about 1676, being a weaver and seaman, and of Salem, 1677-1706." See "Notes" in The Essex Antiquarian. 9 (1905):88; digital images, Hathi Trust.

Berry-5870 and Berry-1317 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife

The October 10, 1668 date is not the date of birth but the date of transfer of property between Edward Berry and his wife Elizabeth (Hardy) Berry.

Edward Berry Sr seems to have a had a son named Edward from a prior marriage, who came to New England in either 1668 or 1677
