Biography

Sarah Berry was born about 1718 in Virginia and is believed to be the the daughter of Joseph Berry and Catherine Bunbury. It is also believed she died in 1720 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

JOHN2 PRINCE (REV. JOHN1) was born February 02, 1717/18 in Richmond, Westmoreland County, Virginia, and died December 26, 1782 in Spartanburg S.C.. He married SARAH BERRY 1738 in Frederick County, Virginia, daughter of JOSEPH BERRY.

John was the illegitimate son of Rev. John² PRINCE and MARGRET PROU.

John moved to the northwest corner of South Carolina and built "Princes Fort." This fort was later overrun by the British and renamed Fair Forest. I have tried to trace two of John C's Sons, William and Henry, both of whom ended up in Caldwell County Ky.

She married a John Prince about 1738/39 in King George County, Virginia. Some sources list Frederick, Virginia

Was it John Prince b. February 2, 1710 in Fredericks County, Virginia and died February 16, 1782 Place: Ninety-Six Dist., Or Lower Dist., Abbeville, South Carolina or

is it JOHN PRINCE, b. February 02, 1717/18, Richmond, Westmoreland County, Virginia; d. December 26, 1782, Spartanburg S.C.. His father's will confirms the long held belief that John³ PRINCE of South Carolina was the illegitimate son of the Rev. John² PRINCE and MARGRET PROU. There are many who think the living authority on Rev. John Prince is Virginia Gurley Meynard, She has also written on the Princes, Berrys, and Doughtys.

Rev. John² PRINCE who left a will dtd 21 Aug 1726, King George County [Virginia] Will Bk A-1 [1721-1752], pp. 53-54. His son John³ PRINCE & wife Mrs. Sarah (BERRY) KERR, he b. 1718, King George Co., Va., d. testate Spartanburg Co., SC.

Was it John Prince born about 1718 in Virginia who died about 1749 in Virginia?

Husband of Sarah Berry Prince [Berry-3388]

Virginia Sarah [Sarah] Prince formerly Berry. [Berry-3388] was not married to John Edmund Prince [Prince-803]. Sarah Berry was married to John Prince [Prince-5399] son of John Prince [Prince-5398] and Margaret [Prou] Rhymer [Prou-115].

[1] The following is an excerpt of a letter from [Mrs. E. J.] Louise Pullen Niedermaier, member of the Huguenot Society via her ancestor Cyprian Prou. The letter was sent to me in 1996 and I have the full letter.

“I am a member of the Huguenot Society, Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia proving I am a descendant of Cyprian Prou father of Margaret Prou Rymer, and I submitted a supplement on Cyprian Prou through my Prince line and the papers were accepted.”

In addition, Mrs. Niedermaier sent me the following Prince Family Chart.

[a] Rev. John Prince [ b ca 1690 Eng. d. 1726 King George Co., Va.] – His mistress –Mrs. Margaret [Prou] Rimer.

[b] Their son-- John Prince [b. ca 1718 King George Co., Va d. 1782 Spartanburg Co., S.C. John married Sarah Berry [d. ca 1750 in Va.] and Mary.

Children by Sarah Berry– Francis, John, Sarah, Mary m. Baylis Earle, Thomasine m. Col. John Earle and Henry who m. Jennet McElhaney.

Children by Mary --- William m. Dulcinea Barry and Mrs. Elizabeth [Ford] Ford, Catherine, Margaret m Thomas Farrar, Thomas, Robert m. Jane Gilbert and--- Martha [Patty] Prince m. Thomas Benson. [Benson's are ancestors of Mrs. Niedermaier.]

[2] Joseph Berry was witness to the will of Cyprian Prou-- Joseph was the executor for Peter Kerr's estate. Kerr was the first husband of Sarah Berry.

[3] Will of Rev. John Prince-- King George Co. 21 Aug. 1726--- Names: John Prince, as son of Margaret Rimer and Thomasin Prince as daughter of Margaret Rimer. This second John Prince named a daughter Thomasin too.

[4] Even the Wikitree Biography of Sarah [ Berry-3388], states that her husband was John Prince, son of John Prince and Margaret Prou. --- The sources under Sarah, do not appear to support her marriage to John Edmund Prince.

John Prince's Prince-803 (husband of Sarah Berry) parents are not listed in this entry from the Biographical Directory of the South Carolina Senate. I have never seen any proof of his parentage personally.

As per the Biographical Directory of the South Carolina Senate (which lists sources in images to show on this profile under images)/all of the information below:

John Prince (1710-1782) Father in law of THOMAS BENSON 9d. 1843), BAYLIS EARLE (1734-1825), and THOMAS FARRAR (1754-1833).

He married TWICE, he wed circa 1739 SARAH BERRY, daughter of JOSEPH BERRY SR. and CATHERINE BUNBURY, widow of PETER KERR. 6 children were born to them: (1) Francis, (2) John (b. 1741), (3) Sarah, (4) Mary (m. Baylis Earle 1734-1825), (5) Thomasine (m. John Earle 1737-1804), and (6) Henry Berry. His SECOND WIFE, Mary, whom he married circa 1751, was the mother of the following issue: William, Catherine, Margaret (m. Thomas Farrar), Thomas, Robert, and Martha (m. Thomas Benson).

PETER KERR was Catherine Bunburry's first husband before she married Sarah Berry's father Joseph Berry Sr. Peter Kerr was Sarah Berry's mother's first husband, not Sarah Berry's husband.
